Skylar’s health took a dramatic turn in early April 1995, when she developed flu-like symptoms. Skylar’s agony was apparently not severe at first, but later that night, her mother brought her to West Hills Medical Center.
Vince had just finished a pro/celebrity race at the Long Beach Grand Prix when Skylar was admitted to the hospital. He received a phone call from his ex-wife, Sharise, informing him of his daughter’s hospitalization. Doctors initially thought Skylar had a burst appendix, but it was subsequently discovered to be a malignant tumor around her belly. Wilms’ tumor, a type of kidney cancer that affects youngsters, was the medical title for the condition.
Multiple surgery followed, but each time the physicians discovered the tumor to be more threatening.
Later, the physicians advised Neil and Sharise to take Skylar to Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles so that all of the Dr. Feelgood singer’s daughter’s tumor fragments could be removed. Her CAT scan revealed that she had two tumors on both kidneys, and her situation was critical. Skylar’s final procedure lasted almost ten hours, during which the surgeons removed a football-sized tumor. Neil disclosed in a People Magazine column on his daughter’s death that her tumor weighed six and a half pounds. Skylar Lynnae Neil’s Death Was Caused By A Factory Dump
The physicians and Neil had difficulty comprehending and discovering the true source of Skylar’s cancer from the start. It was particularly surprising for them given her age. While the exact cause is still unknown, Neil examined the case and came to the conclusion that his former home in Chatsworth, California, where Skylar grew up, was near a Boeing facility at the time, and the industry was illegally dumping carcinogenic elements such as uranium and plutonium.
Vince Knowing this, Vince claimed that the factory, Santa Susana Field Laboratory outside Chatsworth, was unlawfully dumping waste into the soil and water table in the surrounding area. He claimed that their hazardous chemicals were to blame for his daughter’s terminal condition. However, since Neil’s attorney failed to submit the requested records and proof, the action was dismissed by a US District Judge in December 2002.
In his book, Neil questions whether he is to blame for his daughter’s tragic death, claiming that cancer runs in his mother’s family.
