A couple renovating their home got quite the surprise recently, when they found a stash of cash in a suitcase hidden in the ceiling of their basement.
In a series of photos posted to Imgur, Reddit user Branik12 explains how he and his wife found the treasure trove.
The 35-year-old do-it-yourself remodeller says they have been living in the 1940s home for a few years now, but focused on improving the first and second floors of the house before making their way to the basement.
A couple remodeling their home recently found a suitcase with $23,000 in cash hidden in the ceiling of their basement
Reddit user Branik12 says the suitcase was light, so he didn't have very high hopes about what would be inside
When he and his wife opened the case, they found three packages wrapped in what appeared to be wax paper
When they brought the packages out of the case, their hopes soared as they saw the green of American money
The first package they opened was all $20s but the second and third had larger denominations of bills
'Some of the bills were rarer than others. Some brown notes, a gold certificate and some star notes nearly uncirculated. All bills were from 1928-1934,' he wrote
They were taking out parts of the basement's dusty ceiling when they found a little green suitcase hidden in the wall.
'I took the box outside and gathered the wife. It has something inside, but not heavy like coins or gold bars. Might get lucky though. Could be old sports cards,' he recalled.
When they opened the box, they found three packages wrapped in what appeared to be wax paper, with a Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper dated March 25, 1951 lining the bottom. The newspaper suggests the approximate time the newspaper was hidden, and the location of the home.
After opening the first package, they found a stack of bills.
Newspaper lined the bottom of the green case, dating back to 1951
The homeowners believe that the case was hidden around the time that the newspaper was printed
'These are all twenties! There may be a couple thousand here! We are freaking out at this point. This doesn't happen to us! What do we do? Where are the cameras?
'The second package didn't have any twenties. It was all fifties! What is going on here? There could be 5 grand here!. Wait!!!! The third package is 100s!!!! This is out of control!!!

The lot was worth about $23,000.
After researching the bills, the couple decided to have the lot appraised and went to their lawyer to see about keeping the find.
'This was a wild ride for us and I hope you all enjoyed it too. We are boring people and have been dumping our extra money to pay off our mortgage and that is where this money will go too,' the post ends.
