Nudity is the premise of the prime time show Naked And Afraid.

But as per television standards, the contestants parts need to be covered up as they try to survive in the wild completely naked.

Enter the blur team: six highly-skilled graphic artists who spend hours on end watching the episodes to cover up any hint of a breast, penis or vagina.

The aim is to make it subtle, keeping the maximum amount of nudity and not letting the blurs obscure much of the shot.

Consequently, the group meticulously work frame by frame to make sure a bag strap by the waist or a leaf on the hip is still showing.

Now the show's graphics supervisor Erin Gavin has described his day-to-day work in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

And he admits some male contestants have specifically requested the team to give them a 'bigger blur' where their penis would be - something Gavin usually rejects.

'Our job is to make it seamless for viewers so they're less aware of the blurs. It can be extremely tedious work, so we've seen people come and go from here. They just don't have it in them,' Gavin explains.

'We like to think the fake boobs are easier to pixelate because they don't move around as much.

'One of our guys, Shaun O'Steen, says he never really appreciated fake breasts until he started at this job — but, realistically, the crotch is easiest. There's only one, and arms rarely get in the way.'

He adds: 'We've had guys ask for a bigger blur. We won't necessarily accommodate that. We strive to make them as plain as a Barbie doll.'

Describing how it all works, he says they will cut out certain parts from the frame, such as a stick or bag strap, then blur everything, then overlay said stick or bag strap back onto the clip.

Butts are usually always shown, he told THR - 'unless someone has a wide gait' - but they will always try to cover 'the sideboob'.

He then reels off a bunch of terms that the team has come to use as they sit together blurring.

They include 'weenie waggler' (moving penis), 'nip slip' (emerging breast), 'boob shad' (shadow of a breast), and 'floaters' (breasts in water).

He adds: 'spillage, peen, naughty bits, the chinchilla … I'd explain that one, but you probably don't want to know.'

The trickiest frames, he says, involve a shadow of a penis, which can sometimes look like the real thing.

When they finish everything, they start the arduous review process.

'Once our guys have blurred the whole episode we review the show' Steve Rankin, executive producer of the show, told Entertainment Tonight.

'You get five guys and a woman sitting in a darkened room, hoping not to see a nipple or a piece of crotch.'
